Frequently asked questions

Treatment & Experience

How do I know NUZYRA is working?

In clinical studies, most patients began seeing symptom improvement at:

  • 2-3 days for people with acute skin infections
  • 3-5 days for people with community-acquired pneumonia

Although it is common to start feeling better early in the course of therapy, take NUZYRA exactly as directed. Skipping doses or not completing the full course of therapy may:

  • decrease the effectiveness of the immediate treatment
  • increase the likelihood that bacteria will develop resistance and will not be treatable by NUZYRA or other antibiotics in the future

How long until I feel better?

The treatment duration of NUZYRA ranges from 7-14 days. Take NUZYRA for as long as your doctor has prescribed.

What if I miss a dose?

Contact your doctor’s office immediately for further instructions. It’s important that you take NUZYRA exactly as prescribed.

What if the pharmacy hasn’t called?

Please call the specialty pharmacy directly. Contact your doctor’s office to find out which specialty pharmacy your prescription was sent to for fulfillment. They should be able to give you the contact information for the specialty pharmacy.

Morning vs night dosing?

It depends. NUZYRA must be taken with water only, which may be more convenient to do first thing in the morning or just before bedtime. As a reminder, here are the fasting rules for NUZYRA:

  • 4 hours before taking: No food or drink
  • For 2 hours after taking: No food or drink (except water)
  • For 4 hours after taking: Avoid dairy, antacids, and multivitamins

Talk to your doctor about which time to take your medicine.

What can I do as a caregiver?

You can help the person taking NUZYRA by reminding them to take their medication at the same time daily, encourage them to finish their prescription as prescribed, and support them through the fasting window. Look out for any side effects–especially nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea in the first couple days–and contact the doctor’s office to report any issues.

Safety & Medication

Who should not take NUZYRA?

Do not take NUZYRA if you are allergic to tetracycline-class drugs. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for a list of these medicines if you are not sure.

Can I take it for a cold or flu?

Some infections are caused by viruses and not by bacteria. Examples include viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Antibacterial medicines, including NUZYRA, do not treat viral infections. NUZYRA should only be used to treat bacterial infections. Call your healthcare provider if you think your condition is not getting better while you are taking NUZYRA.

Can I take it while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, including if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, as NUZYRA may harm an unborn baby.

Taking NUZYRA during tooth development (during the last half of pregnancy, infancy, and during childhood up to the age of 8 years) may cause serious side effects including permanent discoloration of teeth and slow bone growth of your baby. Talk to your doctor before taking NUZYRA if you plan to become pregnant, or if you are already taking NUZYRA and plan to become pregnant.

Breastfeeding during treatment with NUZYRA and for 4 days after the last dose is not recommended.

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. NUZYRA passes into your milk and may harm your baby. You and your doctor should decide if you will take NUZYRA or breastfeed. You should not do both.

Can I take it with other medications or supplements?

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription drugs (such as oral contraceptives) and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. NUZYRA and certain other medicines may affect each other or may cause side effects. It is especially important to mention if you are taking any of the following:

  • blood thinners (anticoagulants) such as warfarin
  • antacids that contain aluminum, calcium, or magnesium or iron-containing products.

What if I have diarrhea?

Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) is an infection of your intestines (bowels) that can happen with many antibacterial medicines like NUZYRA and may cause mild diarrhea to life-threatening swelling of your intestines (colitis). Call your healthcare provider right away if you get stomach cramps, fever, watery diarrhea, diarrhea that does not go away, or bloody stools.

Will I have side effects?

The most common side effects of NUZYRA include: nausea, vomiting, increased liver function tests, elevated blood pressure (hypertension), headache, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), and constipation.

  • Nausea and vomiting are more common on Day 1 and 2 in people who receive the initial oral doses
  • Reactions at the infusion site (pain, swelling, redness, and irritation) were also common in people who received NUZYRA as an infusion
  • These are not all of the possible side effects of NUZYRA
  • Tell your healthcare provider about any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away
